I measure every Grief I meet With narrow, probing, Eyes — I wonder if It weighs like Mine — Or has an Easier size.
I wonder if They bore it long — Or did it just begin — I could not tell the Date of Mine — It feels so old a pain —
I wonder if it hurts to live — And if They have to try — And whether — could They choose between — It would not be — to die —
I note that Some — gone patient long — At length, renew their smile — An imitation of a Light That has so little Oil —
I wonder if when Years have piled — Some Thousands — on the Harm — That hurt them early — such a lapse Could give them any Balm —
Or would they go on aching still Through Centuries of Nerve — Enlightened to a larger Pain - In Contrast with the Love —
The Grieved — are many — I am told — There is the various Cause — Death — is but one — and comes but once — And only nails the eyes —
There's Grief of Want — and Grief of Cold — A sort they call "Despair" — There's Banishment from native Eyes — In sight of Native Air —
And though I may not guess the kind — Correctly — yet to me A piercing Comfort it affords In passing Calvary —
To note the fashions — of the Cross — And how they're mostly worn — Still fascinated to presume That Some — are like My Own —

| | Into the West - Annie Lennox | ] | It's always fun to rediscover something. For me it would be this livejournal account. I guess I need a place to just pen down poems/quotations that have an impact on me and this site will do. Recently I've haven't the time to indulge myself in reading, but with what precious spare time I have, I find myself reading poetry. Here are three little snippets that really have an impact on me.
Some day we will try To do as many things as are possible And perhaps we shall succeed at a handful Of them, but this will not have anything To do with what is promised today Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror - John Ashbery
My life closed twice before its close - It yet remains to see If immortality unveil A third event to me
So huge, so hopeless to conceive As these that twice befell. Parting is all we know of heaven, And all we need of hell. -Emily Dickinson

| | Gounod: Faust - Introduction | ] | It's already 09 and I have not made any resolutions for the new year yet. So I shall follow the Chinese calendar and make my new year resolutions before the year of the ox arrives.
Proclamations of personal premeditations for the impending year
Save money Excercise a bit Spend more time with my family, especially my brother
I recieved an email today from my writing account, Fictionpress. Someone reviewed my works. I clean forgot about that website, hence I decided to start writing, and reading again on a more regular basis. My current tenure in the army has been distracting me from that of late. Anyways I recently read something fascinating by Horace. I shall share that poem here.
What slim youngster, his hair dripping with fragant oil, Makes hot love to you now, Pyrrha, ensconed in a Snug cave curtained with roses? Who lays claim to that casually
Chic blonde hair in a braid? Soon he'll be scolding the Gods, whose promise, like yours, failed him, and gaping at At black winds making his ocean's Fair face unrecognisable.
He's still credulous, though, hugging the prize he thinks Pure gold, shining and fond, his for eternity. Ah, poor fool, but the breeze plays Tricks. Doomed, all who would venture to
Sail that glittering sea. Fixed to the temple wall, My plaque tells of an old sailer who floundered and, Half-drowned, hung up his clothes to Neptune, lord of the element. Horace: Odes, Book 1, V
This ode is so beautiful. Firstly, the elements of roman mythology is present. The tribute to Neptune as the old sailor hangs up his clothes to the god for saving his life. However, what is most beautiful is perhaps the hidden sublime message present telling one to carpe diem, as is present in most of Horace's odes. Yes, the disillusioned youth believed that the courtesan Pyrrha would be his for all time, and he really revered her. However on a perhaps deeper level, this ode shows that the only constancy is Pyrrha herself, that the courtesan would always be there for all man to ravage, and that when the chance come for us to ravage her, we must seize the day, and do so with all our hearts and passion, as she is pure gold, shining and fond. Well, that is my own reflection of that ode. I try to find a silver lining to the dark cloud of a theme associated here as seen in the abandonment and despair. |

| | Mozart: Le Nozze Di Figaro: Porgi, Amor - Elisabeth Schwarzkopf | ] | I've decided to start writing again. It would seem that my English is in the pits. Recently a superior asked me for some help regarding on sentence structuring. Here is the sentence. Best wishes _____ your future endeavours. He asked me what the most suitable proposition would be in that sentence, and to my astonishment, I realised I had no idea. Even know I really am not sure what the most appropriate proposition is to be used. Hence I decided to start writing again, an attempt to keep my brain working, and not let it deteriorate further than it already is. Seriously, my stagnant life in the army only serves to exacerbate my language skills.
I deleted all my past posts save one, a rather amusing little 'quiz' of some sorts showing what I've read and such. It's kind of a rather nice way of reminding me of the books that I really want to read. And that extremely amusing quote about Jane Austen is so priceless. Anyway, the deleting of my previous posts is a way of solidifying my stance on improving my language. No longer shall I be using this journal as a platform to prattle about the mundane going ons in my life. I want to just share my thoughts on my favourite music, movies, books, and perhaps some views on life in general and society. Rather lofty of me I suppose.
Perhaps another reason why I decided to start writing again is that just a few minutes ago I saw a person advertising his blog on his MSN nick. Well, I went to take a read, and I was mortified. It was so, in today's lingo, 'emo'. I am so disgusted at people who wallow in self pity, advertising their pain, and just seem to love it. It's disgusting, yet it is a growing trend. I want to show people what life have to offer. To perhaps go against the flow. To show some class and elegance. Call me elitist, pretentious or whatever you will, but that's the way I am, and it is genuinely fun for me.
I'm currently listening to Mozart's Porgi Armor sung by my favourite soprano, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. That's her on my display pic by the way. I love the way you can feel her very emotions. Every ounce of sadness and pain conveyed in that aria, yet still sung majestically and elegantly. Really, classical music/opera has so much to offer, yet people just regard it as boring. What a waste. |

Stole this when LJ hopping. Some books are kinda duplicated, such as the complete works of Shakespeare and Hamlet. Anyways, look look, which author's books did I strikethrough the most??? Lol.
I am at a loss to understand why people hold Miss Austen's novels at so high a rate, which seem to me vulgar in tone, sterile in artistic invention, imprisoned in their wretched conventions of English society, without genius, wit, or knowledge of the world. Never was life so pinched and narrow. All that interests in any character is: has he (or she) the money to marry with??? Suicide is more respectable
